Are You Using the Right Mouthwash?

Wasilla AK Family DentistA mouth rinse is usually a staple item in the bathrooms of most Americans.

What kind of mouthwash you choose may not seem all that important, but the right formula and proper use can make a big difference in your oral health.

Dr. Jason Lane recommends specific rinses to patients based on their needs. You can use the following guidelines to help you select the right kind of mouthwash while you're out grocery shopping.

Therapeutic Or Cosmetic?

A rinse you swish for a minty blast may contain no benefits whatsoever for your teeth or gums. These rinses are considered cosmetic. Therapeutic mouthwashes, on the other hand, have ingredients designed to target the cause of problems like gingivitis, decay, and bad breath.

Check your rinse label carefully to see whether it offers any therapeutic benefits. Even better, look for the ADA (American Dental Association) Seal of Acceptance. This means that the product has been proven to do what it says, whether freshen bad breath, fight cavities, or reduce gum inflammation.

What Kind?

You need to be aware of your unique oral health condition in order to choose the right mouthwash. Not just any kind will work. If you are prone to getting cavities, then you'll need a rinse that's rich in fluoride. Are you battling gum disease? A mouthwash that fights plaque and gum inflammation will help you out.

Technique Matters

Rinsing isn't a very hard task. But to get maximum benefit, you should follow the directions for mouthwash use as given by Dr. Lane. Visit him and the rest of our team in person to find out which rinse is right for your smile.
